Shock Doctrine: An important concept central to understanding our times
Naomi Klein, author of the Shock Doctrine, spoke December 3 to a STANDING ROOM ONLY (400+) house at the Coral Gables Congregational Church in Coral Gables. Klein says: "system fails us": this is "not incompetence" we see, rather it is very active, intentional antiDemocracy at work. While any community (or nation) is "in shock" from a disaster (attack, invasion, masssive debt, hurricane, etc.), radical institutional and economic changes can be imposed, such as the "re-making" of New Orleans and the current destruction of our Constitution. A group of outraged citizens were there on Friday, as George Bush left the downtown Radisson Hotel, demonstrating with signs and chants outside as Bush addressed a presumably very select audience inside. Impeachment Coalition members Simon Rose and Dave Patlak report that Bush looked straight at them and their signs as he departed. Police, they say, were surprisingly cordial. Considerable honking indicated public support for their vigil. No advance mention of the Bush event appeared in local media. Could that be because South Florida gave him such a nice reception last time?
